Featuring Dr. Kandace Bethea, Superintendent of Marion County School District in South Carolina
Watch as Dr. Kandace Bethea discusses how Marion County is overcoming their obstacles of recruitment and retention by supporting their teachers with video through ADVANCE feedback.
Marion County School District is rural with low income and high unemployment compared to neighboring communities. This makes finding and retaining qualified educators challenging. We’ve found the needs of our teachers are far greater than the personnel we have available and there is simply not enough time in the day for our administrators to visit each and every classroom regularly. If our teachers are not feeling supported they don’t stick around, so effectively retaining and recruiting teachers has been a huge obstacle in Marion County.
Efficiently supporting our educators and facilitating their growth is important to maintaining the progressive school environment we’re working towards. By implementing ADVANCEfeedback we are now able to provide flexibility to our educators that supports their growth, whether that be through PLC collaboration, self-reflection or peer-to-peer feedback. Our administrators can’t be everywhere at once, but through the use of video with ADVANCEfeedback, they can observe teachers and provide feedback on their own time, without having to be in their classrooms. The video clips work as a common piece of evidence for both the teacher and observer to review, which has been key to teacher growth. This new structure is encouraging reflection rather than compliance, which is a must when it comes to harboring the school environment educators are seeking.
Interested in learning how your district can best support your educators?
One of the key components for transforming a district or classroom is reflecting upon what’s going well and what isn’t going so well, with ADVANCEfeedback we are now able to do that every single day.
The reflective practices that come with ADVANCEfeedback will continue to develop our instructional program for years to come. When teachers feel supported in their roles, it increases their chances of staying in our system and growing with our team. It’s also important to note, ADVANCEfeedback isn’t only positively influencing our teachers, but all of our educators. Our ed leaders are using the tool for self-reflection and peer-to-peer feedback, it’s providing support for all of us.
