NELW 2022 Panel: Self-Reflection

NELW-self-reflection

Last October, our partners at Insight Education Group brought together hundreds of educators from across the country to network, share, and learn—with the goal of working together to improve outcomes for all students.

During the annual conference I hosted a panel discussion with our friends from MSD of Decatur Township (IN) and discussed their five-year district journey of using video-based professional learning and instructional coaching.

The first of five use cases we discussed was self-reflection and how video can help.

We often encourage educators to ease into video through self-reflection, as it empowers teachers to take ownership over their practice and develop at their own pace and on their own terms. As you'll see, our panel recognizes many educators are not completely comfortable with recording themselves in the classroom, and some even face anxiety when watching their recordings back. But fear not, this 9-minute clip offers the solutions and answers you are seeking.

Watch the self-reflection portion of the panel below.

Within the self-reflection portion these key points are discussed:

  • Record your practice easily from mobile
  • Keep videos short and focused
  • How to get over initial hesitation
  • What to look for when reflecting
  • Vulnerability is part of the process
  • The referenced rubric is available here

The feedback from this session was tremendous. Teachers, instructional coaches, and leaders alike shared that they took away ideas and strategies that could have immediate impact on their practice and classrooms. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video above and then share your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below.
